Franz Schubert: String Quartet No. 14 in D-minor, D 810, „Death and the Maiden“

Free Jazz Improvisation

feat. István Grencsó, Saxophone

A string quartet encounters jazz saxophone. Schubert mixes with groovy melodies. Chaos finds Grencsó.

What happens when you liberate classical masterpieces from the constraints of tradition? In Free The Franz, we joined forces with legendary jazz musician István Grencsó for a 60-minute boundary-pushing performance. Together, we treat Franz Schubert’s deeply expressive Death and the Maiden as a living template—framing, interrupting, and enriching it with bold improvisation.

Moving far beyond a standard genre crossover, this project builds an intimate, real-time dialogue between classical architecture and jazz fluidly. By blending classical chamber music with free-jazz approaches, we present Schubert’s genius in a way that is groovy, expressive, and cool—shattering conventions to deliver an experience unlike anything you have ever heard before.
